I Went Vegan For a Week

If your Instagram newsfeed is anything like mine, it is constantly filled with amazing food and food videos, a lot of which are actually vegan (and look surprisingly tasty). I previously challenged myself about 2 years to be vegan for a month as I actually am already allergic to dairy and eggs, a challenge I really enjoyed as it made me see veganism in a different way. I found it fairly easy as I was using my mum's money for food and wasn't busy so had time to prepare meals, so I thought I would challenge myself again and see how it differs now I live at uni, buy food with my own money, have a busy schedule, and a job. One of my flatmates is actually vegan and has been for a few years so I took inspiration from her cupboards and meals and went to purchase my food shop. Compared to my usual weekly food shop which is typically around £15 the vegan food shop was noticeably higher, the first one coming to around £20, followed by another 3 shops afterwards to top up on food adding another £12. It was easy to find items to buy as this year shops and businesses have started to embrace the vegan movement and stock their shelves with plenty of new food. I first tried the Quorn vegan chicken pieces in a Thai green curry packed with veggies and rice, I really enjoyed this minus the chicken pieces which I couldn't stomach and then gave to my flatmate to eat. Personally wouldn't buy these again. However a meat alternative I did try and loved was the Vivera Veggie Burgers from Tesco. These were delicious, easy to cook and I would purchase these again. Another staple for my diet for the week was the Linda McCartney Vegan Sausage Rolls which I have loved for ages, if you love sausage rolls (even if you eat meat) I would really reccomend these. Overall I did enjoy my week vegan, I felt like I was consuming more fruit and veg. I did however find it more expensive, and hard to snack which is something I do a lot. Carrying on from this I'm still drinking soya milk and I'm eating less meat in general, small changes I hope will improve myself and the environment.
