During the Easter break I planned a trip to London with my friend totally unaware of what I was about to walk into. My friend rang me saying someone had been speaking to her for half an hour about saving the bees, and when I found her she was amidst the start of a massive protest. At first I was unaware of what everyone was protesting about until a speaker on a huge pink boat playing music started to talk. Recently the damage to the environment has been discussed a lot on twitter and the media, especially by the younger generation who really want to make a difference (as we're going to be the ones affected by it), so it made sense what the protest was all about. According to the website http://www.theworldcounts.com/themes/our_environment there has been "3,276,000 tonnes of plastic waste dumped in the ocean globally this year" and "a 27.06cm rise in sea levels in the world's oceans since 2000" and both these numbers are rising fast. Wanting to make a change myself I have already tried to cut down on eating meat, using less plastic by taking my own bag to the shop, refusing plastic bags, walking more and using a reusable water bottle. I've also tried to help educate my family on the environmental damage issue and even they are doing their bit to help. Ways others can help is by doing the things I've just mentioned as well as having shorter showers, and avoiding baths, by second hand clothing instead of fast fashion, reduce food waste, and use less food packaging. A few brands in recent years have tried to make their products better for the environment, for example people like Chilly's Water Bottles and even Ikea have invested into sustainability throughout their business. Hopefully the government and other world leaders will start to listen.
