Thought it was about time I did a post dedicated to my favourite singer Sza. The first time I ever heard of her or her debut album Ctrl was last summer 2017 (possibly one of the happiest summers of my life) I don’t know whether my love for this album is because I associate it to that time or just because every single song is either relatable, makes you wanna dance, or makes you wish you had a talent for singing as great as Sza. The whole album is just empowering and like nothing I’ve ever heard before, I couldn’t tell you the amount of times I’ve listened to it and I’m still not sick of it. I like how the lyrics of the majority of the songs are honest, she’s made it for herself and nobody else, no boundaries. When listening I can go from dancing to Love Galore with no cares in the world and feeling like an independent woman, to the next song that’s a bit slower like Broken Clocks which makes me deep in thought and emotional. Not only are her lyrics wonderful, but the videos to her songs are works of art in themself which I could watch for hours. This album brings me some kind of comfort like no other does, I’m unsure why. Adding another element of her personal self, between each song Sza’s grandmother and mother are recorded whilst speaking on the phone, I like this due to the fact a majority of young girls will be able to relate to a family figure like this offering advice. It kind of reminds me of when Chidera Eggerue uses her own mothers advice throughout the whole of ‘What A Time To Be Alone’. If you’ve never listened to Sza I recommend you do now, even if you can’t relate to the lyrics, I’m sure you’ll end up tapping your foot to the songs.
